Starting orthodontic treatment is an exciting step toward achieving a healthier, more confident smile. If you’re getting braces soon, it’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and curiosity about what the first day will be like. The good news? The process is simple, comfortable, and our team is here to guide you every step of the way.
Let’s walk through what you can expect on your first day with braces.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Before arriving for your appointment, it’s helpful to eat a good meal. Your teeth may feel a little sensitive after your braces are placed, so you might prefer softer foods later in the day. Some patients also like to have over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen available in case of mild soreness after the appointment.
Coming in relaxed and prepared will help make your experience even smoother.
Getting Your Braces Placed
The moment has arrived time to place your braces! During the appointment, Dr. Amanda will gently position a cheek retractor in your mouth to keep your teeth dry and easy to access.
Next, a special dental adhesive is applied to each tooth before the brackets are carefully placed. Once the brackets are secured, a thin archwire is threaded through them and held in place with small elastic bands (called ligatures).
The entire process is painless and typically takes about one to two hours.
Instructions for Caring for Your Braces
Once your braces are in place, Dr. Amanda and our team will walk you through everything you need to know about caring for them.
We’ll cover important topics such as:
- How to properly brush and floss with braces
- Foods to avoid to protect your brackets and wires
- Tips for managing any mild discomfort
- What to do if a bracket or wire becomes loose
Our goal is to make sure you feel confident and prepared as you begin treatment.
Adjusting to Life with Braces
It’s common to experience some soreness during the first few days after getting braces. Your teeth may feel tender as they begin to shift into their new positions. This discomfort is temporary and usually fades within a few days.
You might also notice small changes in your speech or eating habits at first. Don’t worry, this is completely normal. Most patients adjust quickly as their mouth becomes accustomed to the braces.
Follow-Up Visits
Your orthodontic journey doesn’t stop after the first appointment. Regular follow-up visits with Dr. Amanda are an important part of the process. During these appointments, we’ll check your progress, make any necessary adjustments, and ensure your treatment is moving forward as planned.
