Getting braces is an exciting step toward a healthier, more confident smile. While orthodontic treatment transforms the appearance of your teeth, it also improves overall oral health and function. Knowing what to expect before and after braces can help you feel prepared, confident, and ready to enjoy a successful orthodontic journey.
Before Braces
Your Consultation with Dr. Amanda
Your orthodontic journey begins with a comprehensive one-hour consultation. During this visit, you’ll meet with our Treatment Coordinator and Dr. Amanda to discuss your goals and evaluate your smile. Photos and X-rays are taken to identify areas of concern and create a personalized treatment plan. If you provide your insurance information ahead of time, our team will gladly review your orthodontic benefits with you.
Understanding the Treatment Process
Having a clear understanding of your treatment is key to feeling confident moving forward. Dr. Amanda will explain which type of braces is best for you, your expected treatment timeline, and any lifestyle adjustments to expect. At Grafton Orthodontics, we offer a variety of treatment options so your plan can be customized to fit your needs, goals, and budget.
Preparing for Great Oral Hygiene
Strong oral hygiene habits are essential during orthodontic treatment. Learning proper brushing and flossing techniques before braces are placed helps keep teeth and gums healthy throughout treatment. Tools like interdental brushes can make cleaning around brackets and wires easier and more effective.
After Braces
Follow-Up Appointments
Regular visits allow Dr. Amanda to monitor progress, make adjustments, and ensure treatment stays on track. Appointments are typically scheduled every 6–8 weeks, though timing may vary depending on your treatment. Emergency visits and appointments for placing or removing braces are usually scheduled midmorning (9 am–12 pm), allowing us to better accommodate before- and after-school appointments.
Retainers Matter
Once braces are removed, retainers play a vital role in maintaining your results. Teeth naturally shift over time, and wearing your retainer as instructed helps keep your smile aligned long-term. Consistent retainer wear protects your orthodontic investment and prevents the need for additional treatment in the future.
Maintaining Oral Hygiene
Excellent oral hygiene remains important even after braces come off. Regular brushing, flossing, and recommended oral care tools help prevent plaque buildup, cavities, and gum issues. Maintaining these habits supports both the health and appearance of your new smile for years to come.

Preparation and knowledge make all the difference in creating a positive orthodontic experience. From your first consultation to life after braces, our team is here to guide you every step of the way.
